ANTHONY AINLEY - 1932-2004
Back in 1986, I first met Anthony Ainley after John Nathan Turner invited me down to the BBC to watch Colin Baker in Trial of a Time Lord. Our introduction was a wonderful moment for me, however it was laced with a touch of awkwardness on my part as I was also meeting the replacement of Roger Delgado. Roger was my Master, and a man who became an important friend, right when I needed a friend.
Now the first thing I noticed about Tony was what appeared to be a sense of shyness and a reluctance to open up. Well I was not to know that my sense of humour was exactly what made Tony laugh the entire time we spent together. After appearing at about 15 conventions together in the USA and Canada, we ended up phoning each other every two weeks to see what was happening in our world of Doctor Who. Later on, in 1988, our friendship was further cemented by the passing of Ian Marter, along with his vital support over my awful divorce!
So with this in mind, I should like to thank Anthony for his perfect friendship, and for being supportive with words of kindness and some of the loveliest letters and Christmas cards over the past 23 years. I would like to wish him peace
up there in Heaven, and to wish that there were more humans like Anthony to make our world a better place. Thank you for adding my love and affection to all the others you will receive.
